The sestertius was one of the most popular and widespread coins of ancient Rome. In the Republic it was made of silver, later under the Empire mostly of bronze or brass. This replica features the portrait of Caesar.

The sestertius first appeared around 211 BC as a small silver coin valued at one quarter of a denarius. After the monetary reform of Augustus in 23 BC it was struck in bronze and became one of the most common Roman coins, used until the late 3rd century AD, mostly minted in Rome itself.
The sestertius also served as a key accounting unit: prices and wealth were usually calculated in sestertii. For example, the fortune of the immensely rich general Crassus was estimated at 200 million sestertii; the price of a slave was about 6,000 sestertii. A legionary’s annual pay in the 1st century was 900 sestertii – about 1.5 sestertii per day, roughly equivalent to 30–40 US dollars today.
