The Écu d’Or is a replica of the famous French coin first minted by King Louis IX (Saint Louis) in 1266. Its name comes from the Latin scutum – “shield” – referring to the French royal arms shown on the coin. The word is related to Catalan escut, Italian scudo and Spanish/Portuguese escudo.
In the 13th century, France still relied on small silver deniers, but the need for larger, reliable royal coinage became clear. Inspired by the florin and Venetian ducat, Louis IX introduced the écu d’or as a prestigious gold coin. Its obverse typically bore a shield decorated with fleur-de-lis, while the reverse showed stylized French symbols and crosses. Later versions, such as the écu à la chaise (Philip VI, 1337), spread widely in Europe, especially during the Hundred Years’ War.
Our replica is cast in zinc alloy with a diameter of 25.5 mm. With its authentic look and weight, it is ideal for board games, RPGs, LARP, theatre or film props.
