The Charlemagne denarius is a replica of the famous coin introduced during the emperor’s great monetary reform in the 9th century. It became the most common currency of the early Middle Ages, adopted not only by Charlemagne’s successors but by most European rulers – in some regions up to the 13th–14th centuries.
Our replica measures 24 mm and is based on coins minted in Aachen.
The obverse shows the emperor’s portrait, while the reverse depicts a building symbolizing the strength of the empire, with Charlemagne’s monogram inside and a Christian cross above – declaring Christianity as the guiding principle of his reign.
The denarius remained the dominant currency of Western Europe for centuries, while the Byzantine solidus held sway in the East.
Made from zinc alloy, this replica is perfect for board games, LARP, RPG, theatre and film props, or as a collectible.
