Ducat gold coin of Charles IV.
The ducat is a gold trade coin originally from Venice. The name was derived from the shortened word Ducat(us), meaning duchy. It spread throughout Europe and, along with florins, was considered a safe standard of value.
There are many versions of ducats from different countries and different periods. A typical feature of a ducat is a portrait of the sovereign on the obverse side, usually the coat of arms symbol of the country where the ducat was minted.
Our ducat is a loose replica of the so-called imperial ducat minted by Emperor Charles IV. The inscription around his portrait is CAROLUS DEOGRATIA (Charles by the Grace of God), on the reverse side is the inscription ROMANORUM ET BOEMIE REX (King of Rome and Bohemia).
Imperial ducats were minted from 1346 to about 1480, then with portraits of Habsburg emperors in the period 1495 to the second half of the seventeenth century. However, all versions were in circulation even when it was not minted.
The ducat or florin was a high-value coin; most people never got their hands on one. Therefore, it was in circulation practically all the time alongside the silver Prague groschen.
We originally created the coins for our games (http://cestycasem.cz).
