Ducats were originally golden trading coins introduced in Venice in 1284. The name comes from ducatus (“duchy”). Alongside florins, they quickly spread across Europe as a secure standard of value.
Our version is based on the imperial ducat of Charles IV (1316–1378), King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor. The obverse bears the inscription CAROLUS DEO GRATIA (“Charles, by the grace of God”), while the reverse reads ROMANORUM ET BOEMIE REX (“King of the Romans and of Bohemia”).
Imperial ducats were minted from 1346 until around 1480, later continued with Habsburg rulers into the 17th century. They circulated widely, and older issues often remained in use for decades.
The ducat, like the florin, was of high value – ordinary people rarely saw one. Everyday trade was carried out with silver coins such as the Prague groschen, while ducats were reserved for large transactions, estates and noble wealth.
Our replica is a large 28 mm coin that feels authentic and imposing. Ideal for gaming currency, props or as a collector’s item.
