Spatha is a sword that originated among the Goths; the name simply means “sword” in Greek. The Goths took the sword Gladius Fulham and adapted it. Because, unlike the Roman soldiers, they fought mainly from the saddle of the horse, they needed a longer and stronger sword. Spatha therefore had a blade of 2 – 2.5 ells (70-90cm). This sword was taken over by most of the early German nations and was used at the same time as the short and heavy sax sword. So it come to Scandinavia and the Vikings. The Vikings improved it by tapering the blade conically to the tip, as we know from medieval swords.

If you’re wondering if our Viking or Spatha sword is better for you, there are two differences:

Spatha is the predecessor of the sword we call the Viking. The oldest Vikings, or Germans at the time of the migration of nations, rather had a sword Spatha, Vikings in some 8.-10. century was more of a “more modern” type, like our Viking.

Both swords differ in blade. The difference is not great, but the Viking is more massive for larp and larp battles. Blade is thicker. Spatha has a slightly lighter, sleeker blade, more for cosplay – however Spatha can take on all larps and larp battles.
